My first Art Book is now Published!

Haven't posted in quite some time, so I wanted to make sure my next entry had some meat on its bones.
I recently completed my first art book showcasing my monster artwork. I started a Facebook group in the winter of 2010 called "Monster-A-Day". Almost everyday I uploaded a monster I did (sketched,painted,inked, etc.) with the one rule that it takes 15 minutes or less to complete.

It now has almost 1300 followers and I decided to do an art book made up of many of the monsters I had done.

To help fan the fires of creativity I decided to start a fun Facebook group called
Monster-A-Day. I'll post a drawing a day with less focus on the polished,finished piece and rather the loose ,edgey raw sketch. Ink,pencil, watercolour or mishmash of things...whatever I grab that day. The only rule is that it takes no more than 15 minutes from start to finish.

It began just a few days ag, but seems to be getting some attention, here's a link and a couple of samples...

A couple of months ago I did a painted jewellery box (wonkie) that looked like a boy sleeping in a comfy bed with all the monsters underneath. The idea came by really utilizing the shape of the wooden jewellery box.

Baby Food Jar Lid Pins

Hello all, and happy Spring- so refreshing to be able to step outside and get a little spring air in the ole windbags...

This post will document the steps involved to make jar lid pins - baby food jar lids (to give you a sense of scale) and each piece has an original painting inside protected by resin and a pin mount attached to the back.
I really don't know if there's anything like this out there, I've googled and checked Etsy , so this might be kinda new and fresh!
They will be available for sale on my website www.gnarledbranch.com as well as Etsy when I get pics posted there...

This is pretty much a sneak peek for you Gnarled Blog readers...

The above is the sheet of relatively finished mini paintings ... drawn and painted
to within requirements of the diameter.

The image is now placed in the cap with resin coating cured.

Pin mount is attached to the back using a high quality adhesive that bonds metal to metal.

Ready for market!

"Brush Out Breast Cancer"

Well here I go again!

I've registered with The Weekend to End Breast Cancer which is a two-day, 60-kilometre walk through the neighbourhoods of Toronto.

Breast Cancer has affected me both through family and a close friend -so I have that desire to do 'my part'.

So...now it's all about fundraising,training walks, more fundraising....did I mention fundraising?

To participate in the Walk, the minimum that needs to be raised is $2000, but I hope to surpass that through my art!

Times are tough that's for sure, but I think
my fundraiser called "Brush Out Breast Cancer" will enable me to reach my goal and surpass it.

I'll be asking boutiques,galleries,restaurants and whomever else that will listen, that I'll do a painting 'live' on the premises - and while I work,people can donate and watch as I bring a canvas to life.
The finished piece then may be bought by the
business, auctioned off, leased or bought by a customer with all the proceeds going to my fundraiser.

Tax receipts for donations of $20 or more are issued.

Art and raising money to conquer Breast Cancer- how can you go wrong----well, you can't!

If you have any suggestions,ideas or thoughts as to businesses that may be up for this -let me know, there's alot of work to do between now and the end of August -so any help is greatly appreciated!

This is an actual sign that had been blown off its post during a windstorm. I can't remember if I emailed the agent or called but at any rate they didn't bother returning my message and I've had this in storage for a little while.
The I decided to paint a rooster. I know-it makes complete sense.

Hey gang,

Well its been a great past few days-- still enjoying the high of a fantastic
Hallowe'en party, enjoyed givin' scares and candies to the kiddies on Hallowe'en night and another 5 shops and gallery are on board to sell my work!

I made yet another batch of beer cap pins- around 350 .... and made a few
that were hmmm, shall we say - a wee bit raunchy.

The end of July ALREADY!

Sheesh where does the time go--as they say?

Insert violin music.

I wish I could do my art stuff more regularly and not devote so much time
to a job that I'm not all that thrilled about and leaves me physically exhausted
and sore every night.

Oh well...may have to look into the artist grant thing.

I'm in the middle of making almost 400 new beer cap pins, magnets and pendants.
Making sure I have enough for new shops that are carrying my work and for upcoming events in August.

Thanks to all my drinkin' pals and gal pals who donate the caps.

Let's see where shall I begin.

Let's start with an unexpected surprise by seeing my beercap creations in a photo while perusing Facebook.

She and her friend were out on the town and she happened to be wearing these .

Apparently they attracted interest from strangers who felt compelled to inquire about

what these pins were all about.

Neato!

Spring is FINALLY here...the spring bulbs are now sticking their noses out of the earth , the birds are noisy, life and renewal is abound.

My show at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto went well... sales weren't too bad, I anticipated better results-however there were alot of really good things available made by very talented local artisans...so I'm happy I sold as much as I did...!

Next show is in Kitchener for Earth Day weekend I believe...

I don't know about you, but this time of year is tough being an artisan who does shows.

Let me explain.

There's a number of juicy and affordable events/festivals that I'm interested in applying for--but
some are overlapping on the same weekend.
Generally you have to send in with your application and check a few samples for a 'jury' to look at and decide if it is good enough or congruent with the event.

Then you may find out that you are double booked.

ehhh.... I've spent so much time trying to research events and promote the site--I haven't TOUCHED a brush in several days...and I'm getting irked.

Today I NEED to work IN the studio and avoid getting sucked into surfing festivals for possible shows this spring and summer.

Before I go, I'm in a cool art event showcasing artists who paint on vinyl records.
These artists are from all over the globe, and to have my work in with theirs is a cool feeling.

Despite the fact there's heaping amounts of snow outside, with more snow forecasted--I know Spring will make her grand entrance soon.

How?

Well, I am grasping to this notion to keep from going completely nutty-- AND more importantly, it's Craft/Art show application time.

The 'wonderful' time of year where artisans try to figure out which show to apply for- which ones that are reasonable as far as fees go, which new ones to try out for, and all the while keeping their fingers crossed that they are accepted.

Brampton. You wouldn't think there's much going on there as far as the cool and unique stuff goes...well don't be fooled, there is--and thanks to the good folks at the Brampton Art Fair there's now a really good venue to show their wares.

It's well organized, fresh ideas, great communication between the organizers and the vendors.

I think this is the case because the organizers themselves are artists- and know where the vendor is coming from.

It all takes place at the Rose Theatre.

Very Excited

With mere hours now before unveiling a completely new look to my website, along with
a whole new added section of my popular beer cap pins, over 12 new paintings almost finished and now little snippets of the creative process and moments caught in the studio using video...I really feel The Gnarled Branch is achieving a more well rounded maturity and uniqueness that it didn't quite have before.

I feel invigorated and excited.

I have to admit 2008 started with a yawn, but now it's getting one toe on the bedroom floor and starting to waken.

I was thrilled to have been blogged by http://torontocraftalert.blogspot.com/...
what a delight.
I've been lurking about that site for quite some time-- at LEAST 5 times a week.
It's a great source of info on what's going on, and where to go thats crafty, arty and neato.

What a great decision it was to post on their flickr group.
Good people there..now it looks like I'll be visiting there more than I did prior.

Other than that it's good to get back on the blogger saddle.
I was distracted with posting rants and info on www.facebook.com
and it just seems that there isn't enough time to work a business, a side business, get groceries,
enjoy a few drinks with my wife, laundry...the mind boggles if I had kids...

I am working on a number of projects and with the longer and brighter days so to is my
creative buzz..longer and brighter.
The time around the holidays ALWAYS saps my want and desire to create.
Its a great time of year for family and friends, but the nonsense that it all entails is and can be overwhelming.

IF "Fortune"

This piece was done a few years ago...

I wanted to depict a labourer (large muscular hands) that was very ashamed to have to beg.

His pride took a back step to the reality of bad fortune.

It's been and more than likely will always be a fear of mine -- lack of fortune.

Fortune to me doesn't necessarily mean to be very wealthy...obviously money has a role but a modest amount of money to the right person can be a fortune.

A person who enjoys the simple things in life, not entangled in materials and objects will have the perception the he/she has good fortune because of family, friends and an overall postive outlook in life.

I can't wait for the warm weather to firmly set her butt cheeks over this house -cause I'm tired of hearing my old furnace come on and envisioning $$$ going to Enbridge Gas...

Godamn Robots show opening April 13th at 7pm.

Billybot is a painting on top of a record cover, some Billy Ocean album... I think it works.

I do a ton of paintings on vinyl records--that are too damaged to play...so in doing so I have a heap of album covers sitting there for future projects.

I recently got news I was accepted into a Burlington Arts Shoppe... more on that later...very nice venue and very nice people.

However, the wallet is very slim but I have a feeling that won't last much longer -i hope...I guess when it rains it pours but I'd prefer constant work not peaks and valleys--but thats par for the course I guess when you freelance .... sigh.

I need a coffee that will uplift my jangled nerves .

Illustration Friday "Green"

This week I wanted to revisit my dear old watercolour box.
Then I found I was reaching for my ink, gouche, and anything else within reach...

I wanted my illustration to have a more horrific, dramatic feel than what I've done to date.

Maybe it was because I was listening to my Bauhaus cd --I dunno.

This image depicts the vicious green goblins-- and they have made a kill, a pixie no doubt...
it was probably napping near the mushrooms on the cool , soft moss.
Something in the area distracted the small green goblin, and he's taken his lantern to have a look.
My guess it's another pixie searching for his missing friend.
Sad, indeed.

Letting Loose

Spring... even though it is snowing outside my studio window right now, I know Spring is
lurking about- ready to unveil her magic.
I remember Spring in grade school... recess, kicking the soccer ball around, the fresh smells, that wonderful warm sun feeling through a light spring jacket that Mom insisted you wear--but now it lies on the ground acting as a goal post.

Seeing new growth erupt from the ground, the birds building nests.

As I get older, I find that fond childhood memories grow dimmer, but with the arrival of Spring- I seem to recall vivid memories much easier and more plentiful.

I can't wait.
